Is Studying Fashion Design Worth It?

Article by: Vanessa Mac – Henry

Two years ago I was studying fine arts at a community college in Maryland before I realized that I need to take the next step to being a fashion designer. I'm not saying that school is the only way to be successful because many people made it without school in some cases like Alexander Wang and Marc Jacobs. Education definitely helps move you up the ladder in the fashion industry.

When I applied to Moore College of Art and Design I didn't know what I was going to expect. I wasn't nervous but I was more determined than any other. I knew that what I've been through in life could only help me persevere fiercely through my college career.  Here are some tips that help me get into my fashion program and stay the course while studying fashion:

  1. Before applying to a design school first and foremost, ask yourself is this school for you? The population? Do they have a good career center? Do they have good internship programs? Are they a private or public school? Do they have good fashion shows? Fashion industry connections?

  2. Studying fashion design at a community college for 2 years or a year then transferring can cut down major costs and also you can prepare yourself even more before you transfer to a four year university.

  3. College is a lot of money. Look into financial aid (www.finaid.org) for scholarships, student government loans that you qualify for and also ask the school what they have to offer too. (Remember to ask as many questions as you can because you deserve to know how your money is going to be spent)

  4. Make sure your financial aid can cover your cost of living and your meal plan because you need a safe place to stay and you need to eat your 3 meals a day.

  5. Make sure you are also able to save up some money because you will be required to purchase your own fabrics and materials for your collection or school assignments. It’s a lot of money but in order to make your dream into a reality you have to invest and believe in yourself.

If you can't for any reason attend college, you can also start off researching local sewing classes, bridal shops or even a leather shop that sews. It doesn't specifically have to be fashion design but you’ll gain experience as an intern in your area. Take it from me, in high school through my two years of community college I interned at a bridal shop and learned a lot from sewing on an industrial machine, altering dresses and developing customer service skills. Start by going to the mall and looking in stores and how they sew their clothing. Take the step and do what's best for you!
