EXHIBIT REVIEW: “SUMMERHOUSE” HOT • BED GALLERY

On Saturday, July 17th I was able to visit the downtown hot spot that is Hot Bed Gallery to take a look at the open call exhibition “SUMMERHOUSE” that opened on June 19th of this year. As soon as I stepped into the space I was greeted with beautiful greenery and lively, bright colors exploding off the canvases. “SUMMERHOUSE” is an open call exhibition that was curated around the idea of escapism definitely after the trying year we all experienced in 2020. The exhibit featured 58 contemporary artists working in a diverse array of mediums including photography, painting and mix media. A cool fact that I learned while visiting was that most of the 58 artists featured in this show are all local to Philadelphia and that some are national artists based in the United States. Curated by Bryan Hoffman, it was great to see how they were able to take so many different voices and ideas of what summer meant to the artists to create a full story.

One thing I noticed was that the artwork was sectioned off into different themes. In one section of the gallery, it had a focus on plants, greenery and florals while in another part of the space it gave more of a tropical element. When speaking with Anais Copper-Hackman, studio and events manager of Hot Bed Gallery, she explained how the exhibit was curated by color and composition. While one section of the space had lots of close ups of the images focusing on the object, colors or even just a section of a particular space other images focused on the full story or scope of its surroundings.

This exhibit was definitely summer time in a capsule and gave an overall bright and upbeat aesthetic and feeling. From the beginning to the end, the exhibition was an overall journey of a summer day detailing activities such as beach trips and even the feelings of summer nights. I definitely enjoyed my visit at Hot Bed Gallery and definitely recommend seeing this exhibit to fill up your day with sunshine and good vibes. “SUMMERHOUSE” closing reception will take place August 21st from 6-9pm.
